Some of the more popular paint modification choices include metallic, flat, candy, or wrap paint jobs. There are pros and cons to consider for each method along with suggested skill level and cost estimates. A cheap paint refinish can decrease the value of your Lexus, while a quality one can increase its value and give it a unique touch.

Metallic Paint

DIY Cost - $100-200 per quart

Professional Cost - $2,000 and up

Skill Level - Difficult, requires professional experience

Metallic paint can make a car glimmer and sparkle in the right light. This type of paint job not only looks great, but it can also increase the car's resale value. Unlike some other types of paint modifications, metallic paint is considered a premium product. It can also hide scratches and resist fading easier than standard paint. Metallic paint is best suited for car owners seeking a more durable or shinier paint color. Unfortunately, available color choices tend to be limited. In addition, they can be tough to match. Some manufacturers don't even offer metallic paint options.

Flat Paint

DIY Cost - $100-$200 and up

Professional Cost - Starts at $5,000

Skill Level - Difficult, requires professional experience

Seldom manufacturers employ this type of finish due to its temperamental nature and some subjective appearance. This type of paint can't be waxed or polished because it will stain the finish. On the plus side, it's easy to clean with a bit of warm soapy water. However, some owners think the paint begins to dull after prolonged exposure to the elements.

Warning

Waxing or polishing a flat finish will ruin the paint.

Candy Paint

DIY Cost - $1,000 for materials

Professional Cost - Starts at $3,000

Skill Level - Difficult, requires professional experience

Most candy paint modifications are done in three stages: a base coat followed by a mid coat and finally a clear coat. The base color is applied first, followed by a pearl coat and then a tinted clear coat. These extra steps often increase the cost of the candy paint job.

Vinyl Wrap

DIY Cost - $700-$1,200

Professional Cost - $2,500 and up

Skill Level - Difficult, requires professional experience

Wraps—especially vinyl—are available in a wide range of patterns, colors, and textures. Many owners prefer wrapping over repainting because it protects against scratches and chips, and may even increase the car's resale value. It's best to choose a high-quality wrap for increased longevity. The highest quality vinyl wraps typically have a lifespan of five to eight years.
