12 Finalists for the Lexus Design Awards

The luxury automaker has announced twelve finalists in the Lexus Design contest. Each of these up-and-coming creative minds will have their work displayed at 2017 Milan Design Week.

1. Ahran Won

In an effort to make the Lexus brand more of a lifestyle, the luxury automaker developed a design contest that tasks the world’s best up-and-coming creative minds to solve pertinent issues through design. Under the prototype category, Ahran Won was selected as a finalist and paired with Neri and Hu as a mentor for the design entitled, “Having Nothing, and Yet Possessing Everything”.

"The moving capsule enables simple and minimalist living through its mobility and functionality."

2. Hiroto Yoshizoe

The second candidate from the prototype category, Hiroto Yoshizoe, was selected for the “Pixel” concept, and paired with mentor Snarkitecture.

"Light and Shadow exist as contrasting elements that compose scenes of your daily life. PIXEL is a device that lets you experience the existence of Light and Shadow with your full consciousness."

3. Jia Wu

Jia Wu was the third candidate from the prototype category, selected for the “Player’s Pflute” concept. Wu was paired with mentor Max Lamb.

"PLAYER'S PFLUTE helps every child explore music. It is a modular music toy system for a child to connect everyday objects using imaginative invention and musical creativity."

4. Jessica Fugler

The final candidate in the prototype category, Jessica Fugler, was selected for her “Structural Color – Static Yet Changing” concept. Fugler was paired with Elena Manferdini as a mentor. 

"Structural Color - Static YET Changing" looks to abstractly manifest the sensation found in nature by creating large-scale structures whose surfaces alter based on the viewer's perspective."

5. Eunjin Park

Among the remaining eight finalists selected, Eunjin Park was chosen for “Buoyant Measuring Spoon For The Blind.”

"The buoyant measuring spoon has braille which lets blind people measure correctly by touching it."

6. Kuniko Maeda

The Landscape Of Paper” secured Kuniko Maeda a spot among the finalists.

"I turned waste into a precious material. Applying traditional craft technique and merging digital technology, I discovered a new application for paper."

7. Takehanake-Bungorogama (Takehana Yoshifumi, Bungo Okuda, Akira Okuda)

Takehanake-Bungorogama, a trio of designers, were selected for their concept, “Mass Production To Unique Items”.

"Our device is a kiln which enables mass produced ceramics which have been destroyed or unused to form a new unique 'one-of-a- kind' item. The kiln is portable and can be used by anyone under the guidance of a skilled potter."

8. Ryo Katayama

Ryo Katayama was added to the finalist list for the “Paper Kettle” idea.

"Paper Kettle can be produced at a low cost, making it affordable... and ideal for camping or hiking. After use the kettle can be put in the fire to burn, leaving no trash behind."

9. Paula Cermeño

Paula Cermeño was able to get a spot among the final eight for her “Platanaceae” idea.

"Banana leaf bandages that out performs Synthetic YET are Biodegradable and soothing."

10. Modlab (Eric Schwartzbach, Benjamin Ward)

Eric Schwartzbach and Benjamin Ward, collectively known under the moniker “Modlab,”, landed in the top eight for their idea, “Pod: Homeless Yet Home”.

"POD is a modular, medium-term housing solution for displaced populations. It can be deployed quickly to locations around the world. Once delivered, the pre-assembled PODs are easily erected by the local people."

11. Takuro Sanda

Retrospection Project / Time Tune Radio” is a concept that got Takuro Sandra in the top eight of the Design Challenge.

"This retrospective radio enables users to listen to any radio program from the past to the present. The tuning dial is linked to archived programs stocked on the Internet."

12. Evgeny Arinin

And finally, “Traffic Light System” secured Evgeny Arinin a spot in the top eight as well.

"In the traffic light's lack of innovation in design, I saw the opportunity to make a successful product. The formula would be to achieve harmony between function and aesthetics by implementing a simple yet elegantly modern system."
