14 Toyota and Lexus Models Ranked Most Reliable 3 Year Old Used Cars

Finding the right vehicle to choose as your next used car purchase is a challenge that most of us have to undertake at some point. And while it's globally understood that Japanese automakers, especially Toyota, build automobiles that last, it's further reassurance for those in the market, that the new study from Consumer Reports suggests Toyota and Lexus vehicles lead the industry in reliability in vehicles from 2021. So if a three-year-old car is what you're looking for as your next dependable driver, Toyota and Lexus have a vehicle for you in pretty much every category and price range. 

Compact: Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius

In the compact vehicle category, Consumer Reports recommends the following choices of 2021 vehicles as the most reliable options: Honda Civic, Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla / Corolla Hybrid, and Toyota Prius / Prius Prime. It's not exactly a surprise that two of the most popular models in this category are on this list for their reliability, as the Corolla and the Prius have become synonymous with dependable transportation.

Midsize And Large Sedans: Toyota Avalon, Toyota Camry

For those in the search for a larger vehicle than the aforementioned Corolla and Prius, Toyota models dominate the list of reliable 3-year-old midsize sedans as well. The candidates in this weight class are the Toyota Avalon, the trusty ol' Camry, and the Hyundai Sonata.

Luxury Sedans: Lexus ES

If a splash of luxury is what you're after in your next used vehicle purchase, Consumer Reports has a list of reliable luxury sedans in their study, too. The list includes two Japanese and a German: The Acura TLX, the BMW 5-Series, and of course, the Lexus ES.

Small And Compact SUVs: Lexus NX, Lexus UX, Toyota RAV4

Small and compact SUVs are arguably the most popular segments for automobile shoppers in America nowadays. As such, there are quite a few contenders on the Consumer Reports list in this category. Of the 13 recommendations, three options are Toyota and Lexus products. Those are the Lexus NX, the Lexus UX, and of course, the top-selling Toyota RAV4. Honda/Acura are tied for first place with 3 models on the list. Hyundai/Kia, and Subaru each have 2 contenders, and BMW, Mazda, and Volvo all have a representative here.

Midsize And Large SUVs: Lexus RX, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Venza

On the larger SUV side, Toyota comes in with even more dominance, taking four of the eight total recommendations by Consumer Reports. In this segment, the study suggests you can't go wrong with the Toyota 4Runner, Highlander, and Venza. And if you're looking for a touch more luxury, the Lexus RX has you covered.

Trucks: Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra

And then there's the pickup truck category. Four total models make the Consumer Reports list: The Ford Ranger, the Honda Ridgeline, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Toyota Tundra. In essence, both of the pickup trucks in the Toyota lineup made the list, while some of the best-selling models of this segment didn't make the cut. Overall, if there's anything to take away from this study, it's that your dad was right when he said the only automaker he trusts is Toyota!
