Unique Proposition

As the automotive industry rapidly progresses, enthusiasts are beginning to realize the value of classic '80s machines. The simplicity, the engaging driving, and the timeless aesthetics have been gaining popularity. Along with the general cool factor of Japanese cars of the '80s, the less common Mitsubishi Starion also brings an undeniable uniqueness to the table.

For the Love of Starion

For Mikie Sorrell, who was in search of a characterful base for his first build, the introduction to the Starion wasn't exactly random. His friend Tanner actually owned a couple of them, with plans to swap an LS1 motor into one. This got Mikie interested in the idea. So when he had the opportunity to purchase a Starion for himself, he did not hesitate.

Alternative Power Options

The build process would become a massive learning experience for Mikie, as one would expect. But his initial plans did not include the addition of a 1JZ. His first performance mods were enhancements to the 145-horsepower factory engine. The old block was not quite durable enough for the added power, though. Mikie had a lot of issues with it. When it blew for the last time, Mikie knew it was time to look elsewhere for power.

1JZ to the Rescue

As luck would have it, another friend of his was selling a 1JZ, along with a transmission, which he was planning on swapping into a Starion as well! It was an opportunity that Mikie could not pass up on. Having purchased the motor, an R154 transmission, a custom driveshaft built specifically for the Starion, the harness, a radiator, and the ECU, he also took advantage of his friend's knowledge of the swap, which made things easy for him.

Boosted Power

With the setup complete, Mikie decided to go with a Haltech Elite ECU to manage the turbocharged power plant. And after an upgrade to the fuel system and the cams, the car was able to reach 512 horsepower and 436 lb-ft of torque with 23 lbs of boost as recorded on the dyno.

A Starion Obsession

Save for the power and drivetrain, Mikie has kept things relatively simple with the project. The beautiful wide body lines of the Starion serve his vision well. And the cabin has remained mostly original as well, with the exception of custom gauges, Momo steering wheel, and Corbeau seats. Mikie subsequently purchased one of Tanner's Starions and has plans to fulfill his friend's original idea of swapping an LS motor under the hood!
