Detail Oriented

When an obsessive, detail-driven company like Lexus reimagines its flagship model, you know the results are going to be impressive. And from what we've seen with the new LS sedan, it's very, very special. But as good as the LS looks and as nice as it drives, perhaps the more impressive thing about the car are its incredible details. From the hollowed out wheels to the advanced safety tech, Lexus put everything they had into the new LS. And that includes tiny details like the door trim, apparently.

High-Tech Artwork

To make a real statement inside, Lexus went with "Kiriko" (faceted) glasswork from AGC Asahi Glass (AGC) to use as door trim ornamentation on the inner door panels of the executive grade Lexus LS 500 and LS 500h. The impressive brightwork is made from glass that is chemically strengthened. But it also features tiny, delicate patterns carved using AGC's advanced in-house technologies to make a real visual impact.

Hand-Crafted, Without the Hands

The idea behind Kiriko glasswork is to replicate the types of designs you might see a glass artist produce. AGC's slogan is "turning craftwork into industrial products," and the LS' door trim is a perfect example of that in practice. AGC combines mold design with glass-forming technologies to produce the intricate, precise door trim, which is then polished to perfection.

Perfecting a Process

The Lexus LS is the first production automobile to make use of this new technology. And according to AGC, it is the world's first door trim ornamentation. Now the manufacturer has perfected its process of mass producing this artwork, so you can expect to see it in other future models.

Old Meets New

The stunning door trim ornamentation is just one of the many details, wholly unique, that come together to form one of the most beautiful interiors to ever grace a production automobile. When designing the new LS, Lexus rightfully put a great deal of effort into making its cabin a pleasant place to be. With "TAKUMI craftsmanship" and traditional Japanese influences coupled with advanced manufacturing techniques, it's no wonder the LS' interior has already garnered several awards on its own.
