2019 Lexus Design Awards Filled with Amazing Ideas
This year's Lexus Design Award projects might just be the most innovative to date.
Pushing the Limits
Lexus is and always has been about unifying the elements of beautiful design, innovative technology, and creative solutions to problems. So it's no surprise that the automaker's annual Design Awards embrace the same ideals. This year's entries were as diverse and innovative as you might imagine, and nearly all of them have real-world implications.
The Finalists
This year's Lexus Design Award theme was ”Leading with Light,” an idea inspired by Lexus’ future illumination technology. Contributions totaled 1,548 entries this year, but only six finalists and one winner were chosen. Here are their groundbreaking ideas.

Algorithmic Lace by Lisa Marks
This special undergarment is a 3D-custom lace bra for breast cancer survivors crafted using algorithmic patterning. The design of this bra helps to prevent the typical discomfort women feel after surgery, giving them the confidence they need to start over.

Arenophile by Rezzan Hasoglu
This project seeks to repurpose something our earth has plenty of - desert sand. Following extensive research, Hasoglu was able to create a number of composite materials using desert sand and non-toxic binders.

Baluto by Jeffrey E. Dela Cruz
The Baluto project consists of modular housing capable of standing up to earthquakes and floodwaters in low-lying areas.

Green Blast Jet Energy by Dmitriy Balashov
This turbine collects and converts aircraft jet blast to energy during takeoff. That energy can then be used to serve various needs at airports after the flights are complete.

Hydrus by Shuzhan Yuan
The Hydrus project consists of various emergency treatment equipment designed to improve the work efficiency in cleaning up offshore oil spills. Which is great for business, but also great for the environment.

Solgami, by Ben Berwick
These window blinds are designed to both generate electricity and increase internal illumination by using origami geometry to give apartment residents a closer connection to their external environment.

The Winner
In the end, Lexus' panel of judges chose Lisa Marks' “Algorithmic Lace” project for its ingenious combination of 16th-century lacing technique and advanced three-dimensional modeling.
"Lexus doesn’t have to do this," Marks said after accepting her award. "They could be a successful brand without it. But it shows their commitment to design and to a better world."
