Vehicle

This LX570 is the Lexus flagship of their SUV lineup. With leather/wood trim, 19 speakers 450 watt sound system, DVD entertainment, four-point climate control, smooth adaptive suspension, and more, this is about as close to a limousine experience an SUV can get. But it has capability off the pavement as well.

4x4 Controls

Mechanically, the LX shares many components from the Toyota Land Cruiser, one of the most capable off-roaders on the planet. There are controls that raise/lower the suspension height, 4x4 or 2x4 mode, crawl-control terrain knob, locking differentials, and more. For pavement driving, the center knob gives Comfort, Eco, Normal, Custom, Sport, and Sport+.

Engine

To pull this huge rig, we need a strong V-8. It is the same basic 5.7-liter found in the Toyota Tundra truck or Land Cruiser. The difference is the Toyota version is listed at 381 horsepower and runs on regular fuel. The Lexus version requires super premium gas for 383 horsepower. Fuel economy listed at 12/16 mpg, which is what we got in 400 miles of driving.

Off-road

Will all of the Land Cruiser hardware, the LX performs excellently in the dirt. The only disadvantage is its large size, which makes squeezing through narrow cattle gates a chore and making wide u-turns awkward. Still, this massive three-ton vehicle is built like a tank, and its solid structure is free of rattles even in the roughest terrain.

Side Steps

Because of the high ride height, running boards are provided to make entry and exit easier. They do not retract, so caution must be used on rough rocky trails to prevent damage.

Instruments

The gauge cluster is well designed and provides plenty of useful information.

Infotainment

Unlike the newer Lexus models that use a finger touchpad to control the infotainment/navigation system, this one uses the older control stick. It is a better system, as it is easier to operate.

Tires

These alloy wheels look nice but will set you back $745. The tires' tread is more suited for the street than dirt but works well on both.

Headlight

The triple bulb LED headlights are standard. They shoot out a strong beam of light.

Hatch

The rear hatch is split into two parts, one upper, and a lower like a pickup truck. This comes in handy for placing gear or tailgate parties.

Seats

The third-row seats fold off to the side rather than the floor.

Price

The base price stars at $91K, but loaded up, the tab come to a hefty $100K and change. This isn't cheap, but only about $6K more than the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Vehicle#2

The Lexus LX570 is a true dual-purpose vehicle. It can fly over the roughest terrain, yet after a wash job, get parked next to all the luxury cars at the country club, and fit right in. And with proven reliability, will be running long after the warranty has expired. It’s a nice SUV to have if you can afford it.
