New Updates

The current-gen ES has been around for a little while now, but Lexus is giving it a few new features for the 2021 model year to help keep it fresh, as well as some interior design changes and various other little updates. The first of those changes relate to safety, and it's something that ES owners are sure to appreciate.

Safety Tech

The ES gains a number of safety tech enhancements across the entire range for 2021, including Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert+ Brake (RCTA-B). ICS integrates the functionality of the alert by camera function and auto brake by sonar function, according to Lexus.

Welcome Warning

The new safety tech uses both front and rear-mounted sensors to detect static objects that are located ahead of and behind the ES, including crossing vehicles. The systems can then warn the driver of the presence of those vehicles or objects, in the event of an imminent collision, which could help prevent an accident.

Reverse Braking

These systems are active when the ES is moving under initial acceleration or reverse acceleration at speeds of up to 10 miles-per-hour. If a driver fails to respond to the warnings, the car can now apply the brakes while in reverse, as well as moving forward, to prevent a collision.

Expanded Offering

In addition to this new tech, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is now standard equipment on the ES 300 EX and ES 300h EX trims. Previously, this was only standard on the SE hybrid.

Other Updates

In addition to this new tech, the 2021 ES also gets a few interior updates including a new power window switch design, moving the OK and Cancel buttons on the steering wheel to make them easier to reach, a revised center console storage bin area, and a few changes to the USD/AUX power lid to make it easier to use.

Keep It Fresh

These enhancements, along with the addition of the new Black Line Special Edition and the first-ever all-wheel-drive ES - the 250 AWD - help keep the ES fresh for the new model year and should help the luxury sedan continue to be a consumer favorite in a fast-shrinking segment.
