Refreshed and Ready

While many were hoping for a more thorough redesign, the refreshed 2021 Lexus IS has arrived looking a lot like the old IS. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, of course, as the luxury sedan is still quite attractive, especially in a world obsessed with crossovers and SUVs. But like everything in life, the 2021 IS has its pros and cons, which we've broken down here for your perusal.

Pro: Handsome Looks

Lexus didn't reinvent the wheel in terms of the 2021 IS's styling, but it managed to give the sedan a fresh look in the process, and one that makes it quite attractive in our book, though styling is obviously subjective. The overall design is smoother and more refined than its predecessor, though still rather aggressive compared to its more subdued competitors, and that's certainly a good thing for people who appreciate standing out.

Con: Interior Space

The IS is a compact luxury sedan, so you don't expect tons of room inside the cabin, but it offers up less interior space than many of its competitors. The large center console tunnel also makes things extra cramped for taller drivers, and back seat legroom makes it best suited for folks who are, shall we say, vertically challenged. Of course, those that aren't terribly tall won't be so concerned with these little issues.

Pro: New Infotainment System

Lexus often catches a lot of flack for its outdated infotainment systems, but it has updated them in its newer vehicles, including the 2021 IS. The 10.3-inch screen is a big step up from the outgoing model, and features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability, which its predecessor did not, along with a touchscreen, which many prefer to the Remote Touch controls.

Con: Drivetrains

There's nothing wrong with the drivetrain lineup in the IS, per se, but we were certainly hoping for at least a small infusion of power for the new model year. However, all of the engines from 2020 carryover, which means that the most powerful option is still the 3.5-liter V6 that produces an adequate 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, which is lacking compared to rivals. How hard would it be to offer something in the 400 horsepower range?

Pro: Pricing

While we can gripe about Lexus being cautious with its IS refresh, there is a bonus that comes from not trying to reinvent the wheel - it also keeps costs, and subsequently prices, low. The IS 300 starts out at less than $40k, which makes it one of the more affordable vehicles in its segment, and even the IS 350 F Sport (the one we'd buy) has a starting price of just $42,900 - over $10k less than a BMW 340i.

Paying Dividends

While we enthusiasts could certainly ask for more in regards to the IS, the fact that Lexus was very calculated in the way it updated its long-running luxury sedan also pays dividends in other ways. The result is an affordable, comfortable, and sporty vehicle that may not beat its competitors in a drag race, but it also won't break the bank in the process or cost you a fortune to fix later on down the road. And is that really such a bad thing?
