Similar Qualities

The compact luxury crossover market is as hot as it's ever been, and the Lexus NX faces more competition than ever. That includes the Acura RDX, which offers many of the same qualities that attract people to the NX. Thus, it's worth taking a closer look at these two popular vehicles to see how they stack up.

The Basics

Both the NX and RDX have a reputation for quality and reliability, as well as excellent resale value. Pricing is similar, too - the RDX starts out at $39,225, while the NX has a base price of $38,535. Both are available with all-wheel-drive as an option, but unlike the NX, the RDX does not offer a hybrid version.

Drivetrain Comparison

The NX is powered by Lexus' 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which produces 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission. The RDX, on the other hand, also comes equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant, but it produces a healthier 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, which flows through a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Host of Features

The RDX comes with a host of features including a powered tailgate, 19-inch wheels, a panoramic moonroof, and dual-zone climate control. Additional options include a tech package that adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, GPS-linked climate control, navigation, a 12-speaker stereo system, and leather seats.

One Downside

On the flip side, the NX comes equipped with a 14-speaker, 835 watt Mark Levinson stereo system, along with a similarly luxury-laden cabin and its own impressive suite of safety technology features. The only real downside of the NX's otherwise flawless cabin is its Remote Touch Interface, which most find finicky at best.

Important Distinction

Whereas the RDX places more of a focus on sharp handling and performance, the NX leans more toward comfort and ride quality, so these two vehicles are quite different in that regard. This is also perhaps the most important distinction between these two vehicles for prospective buyers.

Interesting Choice

Both Honda and Toyota - parents of Acura and Lexus - have stellar reputations for quality and reliability, so it's hard to pick a winner in that regard. Thus, choosing between the NX and RDX comes down to what you personally prefer - a sportier experience or a more luxurious one?
