Crossover Showdown

The compact luxury crossover segment is filled with viable choices these days, giving the popular Lexus NX some serious competition. We've taken a look at several of those competitors in recent weeks, and today, we'll see how the long-running BMW X3 compares to the latest version of the NX, too.

Pricey Proposition

When it comes to base MSRP, the NX comes in a much cheaper $38,535 compared to the X3's starting price of $43,995. Options can make that price rise rather quickly as well, making the X3 a very pricey proposition in this segment. But does it also offer more for that increased cost?

Drivetrains

The NX is powered by Lexus' 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that produces 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. BMW also utilizes a turbo 2.0-liter I-4 in the X3, and it makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. The NX comes equipped with a 6-speed gearbox, while the BMW adds two more cogs to its 8-speed.

Optional Powerplants

In terms of optional powerplants, the NX 300h provides 194 horsepower from its hybrid combination, while the X3 M40i can be had with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces a healthy 355 horsepower. The X3 xDrive30e pairs an electric motor with the I-4 for 288 horsepower, while the X3 M's twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 makes either 473 or 503 horsepower in X3 M Competition guise.

More Practical

Clearly, the X3 is available in some serious performance variants, which is not the case with the NX. However, Lexus' compact crossover has a stellar reputation for quality and reliability, qualities that have plagued various BMW models over the years. There's also the case of resale value, which the NX wins handily with far less depreciation.

Some Similarities

The NX and X3 do offer quite a few similar qualities, including tech-laden, luxurious, and comfortable interiors, as well as available all-wheel-drive. While the NX is front-wheel-drive based, however, the X3 offers rear-wheel-drive architecture, which is great for sporty driving but less ideal in inclement weather.

Easy Choice

Thus, choosing between the NX and X3 is fairly easy. Those that prioritize comfort, reliability, initial cost, and resale value over a sporty driving experience will be better served to go with the Lexus. But if you just have to have a crossover yet still covet a fun driving experience, the BMW is the way to go.
