Long Wait

Lexus' full-size SUV - the LX - has been popular among shoppers for many years now, mainly for the fact that it gives them a stylish, comfortable, and off-road capable mode of transportation. The new 2022 LX cranks things up a notch with fresh styling and some welcome tech upgrades, which has made it a bit of a hot commodity, particularly in Japan, where the big SUV is apparently on a long waitlist at the moment.

What's the Holdup?

"If you purchase from now on, it may take about 4 years to deliver the car," Lexus posted on its Japanese website. "We will consider efforts to shorten the delivery time to our customers as much as possible, and we appreciate your understanding."

Numerous Constraints

This relates to Japan, of course, and not the U.S., which is presumably facing a much shorter wait for the new LX. Regardless, the prospect of waiting up to 4 years to take delivery of a vehicle is pretty alarming, even in today's world, where numerous supply chain constraints have slowed automotive production to a crawl.

Long Running Shortage

The semiconductor chip shortage and various other constraints have depleted new vehicle inventory at dealers, and that drought doesn't appear likely to end anytime soon, given the fact that chip manufacturers can't seem to supply automakers with enough components, even with production running at full tilt.

Other Models

Thus, as one might imagine, the LX isn't the only Lexus vehicle facing this type of issue in Japan. The all-new 2022 NX is also on a one-year delay in that country, while RX300 customers are facing a 5-month wait, 4 months for the RX450h, or 3 months for the RX450hL, and 4 months for the UX300e, Lexus' all-electric crossover.

Passenger Cars

Even passenger car buyers in Japan are looking at a bit of a wait, depending on which model they're after. The flagship LS is on a 5-month waitlist, while the discontinued in America CT200h is currently facing a delay of up to three months in terms of delivery times.

Good Kind of Problem

While it doesn't come as a surprise that many new Lexus vehicles are facing long wait times, the length of some of them - like the LX - are rather alarming, to say the least. But this is a good problem for Lexus, which must now figure out a way to ramp up production in the middle of some seriously challenging supply chain issues.
