High-Tech Jacket

Each year, the Lexus Design Award seeks to find the very best up-and-coming creators from across the entire globe, each year with a different theme. This year's was "Design for a Better Tomorrow," and a three-judge panel of Paola Antonelli, Karim Rashid, and Simon Humphries selected four winners from among 2,068 entries representing 63 countries and regions - including a fog collecting jacket called Fog-X, which was created by Pavels Hedström.

Holistic Approach

Hedström - who is originally from Sweden but currently resides in Denmark - began his career as an architect after earning his Master of Architecture and Extreme Environments from the Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design Conservation. He explores how to holistically approach existing ecosystems.

Solving a Need

As for his genius creation, Fog-X is an expandable mobile habitat that has the ability to collect fog to produce 10 liters of drinking water a day. It can be used to collect water in arid environments around the world where water is scarce but needed.

Making Water

Scientists figured out how to capture water droplets in the air from the sea and convert them into drinking water using mesh nanofiber screens way back in the 1960s, which is what inspired the creation of Fog-X in the first place. But rather than using a bunch of stationary screens, this idea incorporates that same technology into a jacket.

Genius Creation

The beauty of this jacket is that it captures those water droplets while the user walks around, after which they're drawn into a bladder of sorts that stores the drinking water until it's needed. This way, those that find themselves in a place where drinking water is scarce can still have that critical element at hand.

Multi Talented

If that wasn't enough of a reason to make this particular piece of outerwear, Fog-X can also be converted into a shelter when protection from the sun is needed, too, making it a truly viable idea that deserves to see the light of day - no pun intended.

Coming to Reality

On that token, winning the Lexus Design Award means that Hedström will now receive mentorship, funding, and support to help make Fog-X a reality. The jacket is expected to retail for around $400, and it will also be accompanied by a mobile app that helps users locate foggy areas, too, meaning that it could prove to be a real lifesaver for adventurers.
