Safety For All

While there are many other factors most shoppers consider when they're looking for a new or used vehicle, safety remains at the forefront for a number of obvious reasons. After all, while we may never get into any sort of serious accident, such things happen many times a day across the globe, and having a vehicle that performs well in crash testing can quite literally mean the difference between life and death in some cases. In that regard, the good news is that several Lexus vehicles made the cut in the latest edition of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Picks.

Lexus UX

First up, we have the Lexus UX, which earned a Top Safety Pick in the small SUV segment by recording the best possible score of "good" in all but one category - a list that includes small overlap front and side impact crashworthiness, headlights, front crash prevention, seat belt reminders, and the ease of use regarding child seat latches. The UX did wind up scoring "marginal" in the category of moderate front overlap, however, thanks to its poor performance in rear passenger restraints - a common theme among many vehicles these days.

Lexus NX

The Lexus NX also won a Top Safety Pick award this go-round, in this case, by racking up the best possible score of "good" in every single category. In fact, only a couple of subcategories produced "acceptable" scores for the crossover - lower foot/leg protection on the passenger side, driver-side pelvis protection in side impact testing, and rear passenger head protection.

Lexus NX 450h+

The NX's plug-in hybrid counterpart - the NX 450h+ - was also granted its own Top Safety Pick award after acing its own separate crash testing, but as one might imagine, it scored exactly the same as its pure ICE counterpart in every single category.

Lexus RX

Our next Top Safety Pick for 2024 is the Lexus RX, a recently redesigned model that performed quite well in almost every category, save for its poor rating in the recently updated moderate front overlap test. This performance stems from the crossover's lack of chest protection for rear seat passengers, as the shoulder and lap belts moved too far up the crash dummy's torso during crash testing.

Lexus RZ

Finally, we have the all-electric Lexus RZ, which earned a Top Safety Pick thanks to its good ratings in every category, save for one - its headlights. IIHS noted that when driving straight in the crossover, the headlights offered only "fair" visibility yet interestingly, performed poorly when turning left - but not right.
