The aging 2023 Lexus GX could very well be the last SUV of its kind.

Things to Consider

The 2023 Lexus GX is obviously a bit long in the tooth, as the current-gen model debuted way back in 2009 for the 2010 model year, even though it has received some updates in the years since. Regardless, a brand new GX is in the works that will bring about some long-overdue changes, albeit also some that a few may not like, such as the fact that the V8 will go away in favor of a V6. Thus, this video from The Fast Lane Truck may prove interesting to those thinking about buying a current-gen model before it goes away.

Solid Rear Axle

In addition to this SUV's Nori Green paint, TFLT also loves the fact that it's equipped with a solid rear axle, which is a boon for off-roading. These days, many off-road-focused vehicles are ditching this particular feature in favor of greater on-road comfort, but that isn't the case with the GX - at least not yet.

Comfy Cabin

Out back, the rear of GX opens in two sections, which is obviously quite convenient. The cabin is quite nice as well, presenting us with comfy seats, lots of room, a far better infotainment system than older models, and the always-amazing Mark Levinson stereo system, to boot.

Old Fashioned Powerplant

Then there's the naturally-aspirated 4.6-liter V8 underhood, which is something that you don't find a lot of in these days of electrification and forced induction ICE motors. It's a reliable powerplant that isn't overly complicated, and in our book, that's always a good thing.

Cons

Of course, the GX isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and there are some bones to pick here. That list starts with fuel economy, which comes in at around 16 mpg combined - something that's to be expected for a heavy, V8-powered SUV. It also doesn't have the best approach and departure angles from the factory, thanks to a large chin spoiler and beefy bumpers.

Other Gripes

Moving out back, our reviewer notes that the side-hinged door can be a pain in crowded parking lots, and the third-row seat is difficult to fold down. The old-fashioned touchpad that controls the infotainment screen is also a pain, as it's overly sensitive and just not very intuitive.

Last of Its Breed

Regardless, for those seeking a reliable, body-on-frame luxury SUV with N/A V8 power and room for the whole family, there just aren't many to choose from these days. That list will shrink with the arrival of the next-generation GX too, so now might just be the time to snag one before it's gone.
