Massive Turnaround

It's no secret that Lexus sales results as of late haven't exactly set anyone's world on fire, a problem that most attributed to an aging lineup desperately in need of an overhaul. Over the past couple of years, that's precisely what has taken place, These efforts paid off in 2023, as Lexus enjoyed a tremendous year in the U.S., where it enjoyed a 23.8 percent sales increase, year-over-year. Here, we'll break down precisely what drove that surge and helped make Lexus a key player in the luxury vehicle market once again.

NX

First up, we have the new-for-2022 Lexus NX, which enjoyed its best-ever sales year in 2023, a result driven mostly by hybrid variants. In fact, the regular hybrid NX posted a year-over-year sales gain of 54.5 percent, and the PHEV wasn't far behind with a 50.5 percent increase. Overall, Lexus sold 74,526 NX models in 2023, which is a whopping 52.1 percent more than last year's tally of 49,002, proving that the crossover has really gained a foothold in the American car market.

RX

The same rings true for the recently redesigned Lexus RX, which also posted its best-ever yearly sales total at 114,033 units sold. That figure is 18.7 percent higher than last year's tally of 96,041 units, helping the RX retain its title as Lexus' best-selling - and perhaps most important vehicle overall.

LX

Meanwhile, the Lexus LX also received a total overhaul recently, and buyers are clearly taking to the large, luxurious SUV in spite of its large price tag. Lexus sold 6,959 LX models in 2023 - a small number in the grand scheme of things, but also one that's a stunning 91.1 percent higher than 2022, when Lexus moved just 3,642 units.

SUVs

Speaking of SUVs, Lexus enjoyed its best-ever sales year for that particular segment as well. This success can partially be attributed to the aforementioned trio of the NX, LX, and RX, but they weren't alone. In fact, the UX recorded 11,846 sales for a 16.1 percent increase, and even the outgoing GX enjoyed a sales increase of 6.6 percent while posting sales of 31,910 units.

Electrified Vehicle Sales

Then there are electrified vehicle sales in general, which posted their best-ever sales result for Lexus in 2023. In total, hybrids and EVs compensated for 91,527 sales last year, or 29.2 percent of the brand's 320,249-unit total. That's also 65.9 percent higher than last year, a rather stunning increase that proves Americans are hungry for hybrids, in particular.
