Enduring Reputation

Following its debut decades ago, Lexus has developed a pretty stellar reputation for reliability, one that hasn't wavered one bit. Most everyone familiar with automobiles is well aware of this fact, and it's something that's reflected in numerous studies and awards handed to the luxury brand over the years, too. However, it's worth asking - how, exactly, did Lexus earn its stellar reputation for quality? Turns out, there are a few good reasons why this is the case.

Family Ties

Automakers take different approaches to their respective luxury divisions, but Toyota has largely followed a proven formula with Lexus - base many of its models on existing ones. The major benefit to that strategy is that Toyota vehicles have long held a stellar reputation for being incredibly reliable as well, and that reputation immediately carried over to Lexus. Aside from being based on Toyota models, Lexus vehicles also share things like platforms and mechanicals with their corporate brethren, which benefits both the automaker in terms of cost savings and consumers in terms of overall quality and dependability.

Culture of Craftsmanship

The concept of Lexus from the start was to offer loyal Toyota customers the same type of reliability and value in more luxurious vehicles, but the automaker also wanted Lexus vehicles to be rolling showcases for Japanese craftsmanship. Enter the Takumi craftsmen who help design and build Lexus vehicles, who are the absolute experts in their field with more than 25 years of experience, and help ensure that every Lexus model is the best it can possibly be.

Production Process

Of course, one can't build one of the world's most reliable luxury brands without perfecting the production process, which is where many flaws and quality issues are born. In that regard, Lexus has extremely high standards for its production process, and if a problem is incurred on the assembly line, workers can pull a cord and shut the entire line down. This way, the issue can be analyzed and corrected to ensure that it doesn't affect production vehicles in any meaningful way.

Lofty Standards

The cord system is just one example of Lexus' lofty standards when it comes to building quality vehicles, of course. There are many other examples of these high expectations at the factory, including the fact that experts analyze engines down to the last nut and bolt, from assembly to test drives, along with an extensive paint process - in fact, before engineers can enter that particular area, they have to walk through a shower room of sorts to ensure that they don't introduce any dust or other particles.

Technology

While technology features are the root cause of many automotive brand's quality woes, Lexus doesn't seem to experience the same kinds of problems. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that Lexus tests these things for an extended period of time before implementing them into its vehicles, which means that while it isn't always the first to market when it comes to cutting-edge tech, shoppers can take solace in the fact that those things will work properly and not cause major headaches later on down the road.
