Not a Lexus

It's no secret that Toyota created Lexus to serve as its luxurious counterpart, a brand designed to compete directly with its long-established German rivals. Thus far, it has done a fine job of that, but interestingly enough, Toyota has also created its fair share of luxurious - in some cases, ultra-luxurious - models bearing its own nameplate instead of Lexus'. Here are five of the more notable examples among that group.

Toyota Century

First up, we have a model that many Toyota fans are well aware of - the Century - which originally came to be long before Lexus even existed, in the 1960s. It quickly became the vessel of choice for Japanese government officials and other rich or famous folks, and for good reason - it boasts Rolls Royce levels of luxurious and build quality, and even spawned an SUV variant recently.

Toyota Crown Majesta

The Toyota Crown Majesta is another cushy ride designed to compete with other luxurious full-size sedans, which it did for the better part of three decades. It featured loads of technology and ADAS features that cars in the early to mid-2000s didn't generally have at the time, along with fancy leather and wood trim, an air suspension, and other components that make a luxury sedan a luxury sedan.

Toyota Avalon

The Toyota Avalon spent decades atop Toyota's lineup as its proverbial flagship sedan and became quite popular thanks to its comfortable ride and a bevy of luxuries as well. Along with premium audio systems, leather, and wood trim, the Avalon could also be had with an adaptive suspension. Like the Lexus GS, the Avalon has been discontinued, but it's still a solid target on the used vehicle market.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Prior to its revamp as a smaller, box, more off-road-focused SUV, the Toyota Land Cruiser was a full-size utility with loads of luxurious features present. It's still quite capable off the pavement but touted a higher price tag than its successor due to the presence of not only loads of luxury features but also, tons of tech as well - heck, it even offered a night vision system in Japan.

Toyota Crown

Finally, we have the newer Toyota Crown - as well as the Crown Signia SUV - which continues a tradition of offering customers plenty of luxuries. The Crown lineup features cushy interiors that rival Lexus in many areas, in fact, and tout a quiet cabin and comfortable ride quality, which makes both suitable alternatives to comparable Lexus models at a lower price.
