SUV

Lexus is a luxury brand, so is used to producing large fancy vehicles. But with the demand of SUV's, and smaller sizes, the factory has been introducing more compact models. This also results in a lower price tag, although the luxury theme is still there. This is the latest example. The UX comes in two versions, the 200 or the 250h hybrid seen here.

Engine

The UX 200 has a 2.0 liter engine putting out 169 horsepower. It is rated at 29/37 mpg, with 33 average. This UX 250h is issued with a 2.0 liter as well, but with the gas engine and electric motor/battery system, the total output is 175. The fuel economy claimed is 41/38 with 39 overall. Both come with a CVT transmission.

AWD

The engine drives the front wheels, while an electric motor turns the rear wheels, so this is sold as an all-wheel drive. 18-inch wheels with all-season run-flat tires are issued.

Off Road

With high ground clearance and all-wheel traction, the UX can be taken off the pavement, but this is a car platform, so tread lightly. There is no spare tire, so even with run-flats; it’s a good idea not to wander too far off the pavement.

Touchpad

The infotainment system is controlled by a touch pad, rather than a stick as on many other Lexus vehicles. It takes some getting used to.

Radio

The radio controls are the best we have ever used on a vehicle. They are placed on the console between the seats, easily reached by the right hand. As a bonus, they can be operated without taking your eyes off the road. This is a new standard that other automakers should copy.

Gauge

The gauge cluster is well designed, with lots of useful information.

Cargo

Since this is a subcompact SUV, the room in the rear storage area is only 17 cubic feet, but more space can be created by folding the second-row seats. A tire repair kit is located under the floor as there is no room for a spare tire.

Headlight

The optional LED headlights are auto-leveling. They produce a large amount of light, especially on high beam setting. But they will add a hefty $1,660 to the tab!

Price Tag

The non-hybrid UX starts at only $33K. This hybrid is loaded up with everything, so total damage came over $43K.

Economy

Overall fuel economy was 41 mpg in the city, 40 in mixed commuting, and 35 on highway trips cruising at 75 mph. The more city driving is done, the more fuel costs will drop. Plus you get the luxury and reliability of a Lexus.
