A Closer Look at the 2021 Lexus LX-570 SUV
Serious off-roading with luxury and style.

In the Lexus lineup, this LX-570 is the sought after flagship. It offers luxury combined with off-road ability. This is the last year it will be sold in North America, so it might be your last chance to get a new one. Is it worth it? Let's take a ride.

Engine
Under the hood is a proven 5.7 liter V-8. It is the same basic motor found in the Toyota Land Cruiser and Tundra pickup truck. The difference is Toyota recommends the use of standard regular unleaded fuel for a 381 horsepower rating. Lexus suggests the use of premium blend, jumping output to 383 hp. Either way, the EPA rating of 12/16 mpg drains the tank in a hurry. Our overall average was 14.

Off-Road Controls
This Lexus has all the controls needed for serious use in off-road adventures. The 4x4 system is full time, with low range and locking differential, and crawl control. The suspension can also be raised for better ground clearance. The buttons and switches are well located and simple to use.

Tires
The forged 21-inch wheels are part of a sport package. This includes a special grille, front and rear spoilers. It all looks nice but the hefty price tag of $6K extra raised eyebrows. The Dunlop tires are designed for both street and dirt, and do a nice job. They are not cheap to replace if you get a flat at about $600 each, as we found out after hitting a road hazard.

Screen
The info screen is huge, and climate controls are easy to operate.

Instruments
The gauge cluster is well designed and gives lots of useful information.

Headlights
The triple beam LED headlights put out plenty of light, as they should.

Steps
The side steps make it easier to enter and exit the vehicle, but don't interfere with off-road performance.

Rear Doors
The split bottom and top door system is old-fashioned but works well. The third-row seats fold up to the side and make room for plenty of gear.

Performance
The Lexus LX-570 has all the off-road ability of its cousin the famous Toyota Land Cruiser and reliability as well. But it does so with far more comfort and luxury.

On Pavement
The LX is pleasant to drive on long highway trips. The only disadvantage is the three-ton weight, which doesn't help with fuel economy. But this rig is built like a tank, and certainly a good selling point for many owners.

Off Pavement
The LX is also pleasant to drive on rough dirt trails, thanks to a well-designed suspension that absorbs impacts with ease. There is plenty of ground clearance to avoid rocks, especially with the adjustable suspension.

Price
The LX is not cheap, with our loaded version hitting $106,755. But we are getting a lot of vehicle for the money here. It's a great ride for those who can afford the cost and upkeep.
