Bouncing Back

In a year that marked a big comeback for the automotive industry in general following years mired in supply chain issues, Lexus enjoyed a tremendous 2023 by any measure. In fact, Toyota's luxury brand sold a record 824,258 vehicles across the globe last year, which is 32 percent more than in 2022. However, that isn't the only notable factoid from these impressive results, as there's quite a bit of information here to digest.

Record-Setting Year

For starters, we can't single out any particular region for this record-breaking performance, as Lexus enjoyed tremendous success across the entire globe. However, we can look at North America, Europe, China, and Japan as the leaders in this surge. In Europe, Lexus sold 69,202 units in 2023, which represents a healthy 46% increase, followed by North America at 355,606 units (a 24% gain), China with 181,411 units sold (a 3% increase), and Japan, where Lexus recorded 94,647 sales last year (a 129% jump).

Regional Sales

In addition to those regions, Lexus also enjoyed a strong performance from the Middle East, where it moved 46,472 units for a 160 percent year-over-year increase, along with the entirety of Asia, which recorded 236,587 sales - 113 percent more than 2022.

Electrified Models

While the sales of EVs slowed down somewhat in 2023, Lexus electrified vehicle sales - including all-electric models and hybrids - reached a new high of 47 percent in terms of the brand's total global sales mix last year. Leading the way in that regard were the UX hybrid and its 72 percent increase in sales, the RX hybrid at 92 percent, and the NX hybrid at 55 percent.

SUVs and Crossovers

While passenger cars continue to decline in terms of sales - for Lexus, by 3.2 percent in 2023 - the same can't be said of crossovers and SUVs, which surged by 34.3 percent last year. The LX led the way with a 92 percent increase in sales versus 2022, followed by the NX at 52.6 percent and the RX at 19.1 percent.
