Check Out Lexus' New Kinetic Seat Concept (Photos)

Lexus knows that the seats you and I have been sitting in, day in and day out, are all wrong for us. Now they've created a new concept for seating in their cars that will change everything.

1. Old problems yielding to new solutions

With a structure that resembles what a mechanical spider would create if it were to be set loose in Toyota's development labs, comes these Kinetic seats. Lexus really was inspired by spiders when they came up with the construction of the chairs; the threads form a web-pattern that forms to your body the same way a spider's web would. Audi has a deal with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I really do think Spider-man might prefer a Lexus with these seats over those fancy Volkswagens they're driving around on screen.

2. Will the Lexus gain "spider-sense" too?

The seat frame is covered with web-patterned material that is made from environmentally friendly synthetic spider silk, to create a strong yet flexible backing. The main component of this synthetic silk, created by QMONOS, is a protein that is created through microbial fermentation. Then, the protein gets spun and processed, much like a spider would, into the thickened state where it can offer superior flexibility and shock absorbance.

3. These seats will leave the strangest marks on your legs

We could see these Kinetic seats installed from the factory as soon as the new UX, which was greenlit for production in March, hits the streets. In the UX, the seats have been changed some, to go from the spider web pattern to something more like ribbon strands. Lexus notes that because the seats take up less space in the cabin, their interiors will become even roomier than before.

4. They'll make you feel like a natural woman (or man)

By looking at ergonomic factors, and x-rays of how a person should sit versus how a person has been forced to sit, Lexus went to work. No matter what you do, your spine is always acting as a stabilizer for your head. For example, when you run or jog, your body is bobbing and could even lurch if you trip but your head stays poised. In order to move that naturalness to the seats, the cushion and back rest were made so that they have more give to them. When the seat itself can move kinetically, then it moves along with your weight and helps to soak in any external forces that may be exerted on it. Stabilizing you in the seat will keep your field of vision steady as well as reducing the strain on you and the occupants, improving the ride for everyone.

5. If our great-grandparents could see us now

I have to say, I am very happy with Toyota's recent effort to take things in a much more exciting and dynamic direction with not just the design of their cars, but with the thinking that's going into them. With that being said, the Kinetic seats are really cool and can probably cut down on road rage, as well as the driving fatigue that owners may experience on the road. I never thought I'd be saying this, but Lexus is taking us all into the future while sitting in chairs made from robot spider silk. Huzzah!
