New Compact SUV

Toyota unveiled a new compact SUV offering in Indonesia this week. The new Toyota Raize made its debut following that of the Daihatsu Rocky, which is the Daihatsu's equivalent of the Raize. The small SUV will be offered in three different trims: 1.2 G, 1.0 Turbo G, and 1.0 Turbo GR Sport.

Power Options

As is evident by the naming system, the lower-level 1.2 G is powered by a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder motor that is capable of a power output of 87 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque. The mid-range 1.0 Turbo G and the top-level 1.0 Turbo GR Sports are powered by a 1.0-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder, capable of 97 horses and 103 lb-ft of torque.

Practicality

A choice between a CVT transmission and a 5-speed manual is available for the lower two lower trim levels. The 1.0 Turbo GR Sport comes exclusively with paddle shifters. The compact footprint of the new Toyota maintains ease of drivability in the tightly packed streets of Southeast Asian countries. But the taller crossover profile allows for plenty of passenger room and cargo space.

Available Tech

Speaking of the interior space, the Raize comes with standard tech such as a 7-inch display for the instrument cluster, and an 8-inch center display for the 1.2 G trim. The turbo versions both get 9-inch center displays. And the range-topping GR Sport models get auto climate control, fabric/leather upholstery, and the full Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance systems.

Asia Only

Pricing has been announced for the Raize in the Asia market. It's unlikely that the compact crossover will be sold in Europe, and it's probably a safe bet that we won't be seeing it in the States. Buyers in Asia will have a choice between black, metallic grey, red, metallic silver, turquoise, yellow and white, in terms of paint colors. The last 5 of these options can be had with a black roof, though that option is exclusive to the turbo models.
