Live From Tokyo

The Tokyo Motor Show always has a handful of cool rides to scope out - not only new and/or refreshed models, but also, a host of cool customs, with many of those one-offs coming from automakers themselves. That was once again the case at the 2024 Tokyo Motor Show, which is where Lexus revealed a pair of rather intriguing builds, too.

RZ 450e Special Edition F Sport Performance

First up, we have the Lexus RZ 450e Special Edition F Sport Performance, which is a long way of saying that we are looking at a sportier version of the Lexus' first global, mass-produced EV. This special RZ is actually headed to production - but will be limited to just 100 units destined for Japan - though it's certainly interesting, regardless.

The RZ 450 e Special Edition is actually based on the RZ Sport Concept that made its debut at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, which means that it's adorned with plenty of custom bodywork all over, from its reworked front fascia to side skirts and rear wings, all of which were added to enhance the car's aerodynamics - and aircraft pilot Yoshihide Muroya helped develop them, to boot.

Lexus also teamed up with racing driver Masahiro Sasaki to make this Special Edition RZ a bit sportier, and in that regard, it features specially-turned shocks and coil springs, along with 21-inch wheels. It's unclear what kinds of difference those moves make, but Lexus claims that the limited-edition RZ delivers "uncompromising driving performance."

LBX Morizo RR Concept

For the ICE fans out there, Lexus also had something pretty cool up its sleeve at Tokyo - the LBX Morizo RR Concept, which is based on the new, compact LBX. However, unlike its more mundane counterpart, this concept utilizes the turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-three-cylinder engine from the Toyota GR Yaris and GR Corolla

LBX Morizo RR Concept

With 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque on tap, the LBX Morizo RR Concept is certainly a hoot to drive, and the "Morizo" part of its name even refers to the nickname of Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda. Perhaps the only disappointing feature here is a new eight-speed automatic transmission in place of the six-speed manual found in the aforementioned GR machines, in fact.

Regardless, this special LBX is still a potent machine with more than double the output of its stock counterpart, coupled with a revised suspension, wide bodywork, 19-inch wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, and other tricks that make it truly compelling. Of course, we'd love to see Lexus put this tiny performer into production, but there's no word on whether or not that will actually happen.
