Do you Remember the First-Gen Lexus ES 250?

The LS 400 wasn't the only Lexus that debuted back in 1989.

The "Other" Original Lexus

Today, the Lexus ES is a common, well-known sedan that sells rather well. But what a lot of folks have forgotten or never knew in the first place was the fact that when Lexus debuted as a brand in 1989, it did so with not just the LS, but also the ES. The original ES 250 was obviously overshadowed by its big brother, and quickly became a footnote in history.

Another Option

Obviously, Toyota didn't just want to launch a new brand with one model, which might make it seem like Lexus would be destined to stick around for just a few years before disappearing. It also needed a more affordable option for those that couldn't spring for an LS, and the ES 250 certainly fit the bill in that regard.

Camry Like

It's often said that the ES is based on the Camry, which is partially true. But it was closer to the JDM Camry than the U.S. version, with its frameless side windows and different C-pillar and headlight design than the American Camry. The ES was most similar to the Japanese-market Camry Prominent sedan, but wore Lexus design cues like the front grille and rear taillights.

Interesting Quirks

The ES 250 was powered by a 2.5-liter V6 that produced 156 horsepower, and was available with either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual gearbox, which was an interesting option. Another was the availability of cloth seats in lieu of the optional leather.

Short Stay

Unfortunately, the ES 250 didn't hang around for long. In fact, it was only produced from 1989 to 1991, serving essentially as a placeholder until Lexus could develop something more uniquely, well, Lexus. The next ES would still be based on the Toyota Windom, but at least it looked like more than just a slightly revised Toyota.

Rare Find

These days, you rarely see an original ES 250 on the streets, especially in good condition. It certainly isn't anything we'd call valuable or collectible, but the original ES is certainly rare.

Footnote in History

The ES 250 is also a pretty cool and forgettable footnote in Lexus history that's worth remembering. But chances are, it'll never achieve the kind of cult following the LS 400 has formed in recent years.
