Steep Depreciation

By all accounts, the Lexus LC coupe is an amazing grand touring machine. One with solid performance, supreme comfort, and neck-snapping good looks. But if you've thus far been hesitant to dish out $100k for one, we've got some good news for you.

Shocking Value

Autotrader was shocked recently to discover that used LC coupes are selling at huge discounts. And quite frankly, so were we. It's not uncommon for luxury vehicles to lose a large slice of value in the first year of ownership, but the LC is depreciating faster than most.

Bargain Basement

How fast, you say? Well, how about a whopping $40,000 drop? There are, in fact, quite a few used LCs listed for under $80k. The cheapest one Autotrader could find carried a bargain basement price of just $70,570.

Bottom Falls Out

Even better, all of those were V8-powered LC 500 models. Which is obviously the one you want. And Autotrader expects values to fall even further, to as low as $50-$60k in the next few years.

Underappreciated Gem

If and when that happens, it'll be hard to resist picking up a used LC. You certainly won't find much more car for the money, and it just underlines how underappreciated the modern performance coupe has become.

Complicated Reasoning

So the only question left to ask is, why is this happening? And the answer is multi-faceted. For one, we all know that passenger cars in general just aren't the apple of America's eye anymore. That's reserved for SUVs.

Niche Car

Secondly, the LC is obviously a niche vehicle. It's made for folks who appreciate taking nice, long drives to the golf course. People who want to cruise canyon roads in comfort. It obviously isn't exactly built for the average person who has 2.5 kids and a huge mortgage bill.

Missing the Market?

You also have to wonder if the traditional Lexus customer is turned off by the LC's dramatic exterior and interior styling. And those are the kinds of folks that would traditionally buy an expensive luxury coupe - people that are retired and rather well off.

Target Audience

Sure, there are plenty of young, performance-hungry folks that would gladly line up for an LC. But you have to wonder if the car's heavy curb weight, softer handling, and somewhat mundane performance are turn-offs to them, too.

Simply Irresistible

Whatever the reason behind this sharp decline in value, you can't deny that the LC is a bargain in the $70k range. Those that thought that $100k was too much are likely very pleased to see this happening. And personally, we find the prospect of picking one up at that price almost too tantalizing to resist!
