Targa Top Supra

At last, the Targa top Supra we've been waiting for is here. At least as a concept. The MKIV Supra's popularity was one of the key proponents of Toyota bringing back the iconic nameplate for a fifth generation. And one of the features of the MKIV that many of us wanted to see implemented into the new Supra was the removable top panel. And now, it looks like the MKV might be getting it, too!

Concept Car

Toyota recently released these photos of the Supra concept with a removable targa top. They're calling it the Sport Top Edition. And along with the photo gallery, the manufacturer also shared a video that outlines how the concept was created. And the open-top concept will be based on the Heritage Edition concept we saw at SEMA.

Sport Top Edition

The video shows Marty Schwerter speak about the creation of the concept car. He explains how the top panel can be popped off and stowed conveniently in the trunk. They're still in the process of figuring out exactly how the mechanism will be built and programmed.

Chassis Stiffness?

Of course, removing the structural elements of the roof will mean extra rigidity has to be added elsewhere. And the plan for the concept is to add that rigidity in the underbody. If the car is to be mass-produced, there may be more thorough measures used to stiffen the chassis. But we will have to wait and see.

Shades of the Heritage Supra

Several features on the Sport Top Edition Supra are carried over from the Heritage concept we saw at last year's SEMA show. And that includes the MKIV-inspired rear wing, which is perfectly complimentary to the look of the Supra. The blacked-out graphics and aero features contrast beautifully from the white paint.

Will it Ever Be Produced?

According to Toyota, there are no plans in place to take the Sport Top Edition into production. It remains a one-off concept, for the time being. But perhaps the company brass will change their mind once they see the level of enthusiasm for the open-top Supra. For now, we can add the Targa Supra to the manual transmission in the list of things we want to see on the MKV Supra!
