How to Adjust the Opening Height of The Rear Hatch for a RX or NX

Are you having trouble with the height your tailgate is opening up on your Lexus? We've got the step-by-step on what you need to do to correct this issue.

Whether it's for you or a member of your family who is the primary driver of either of these models you may wish the tailgate didn't open up a bit high. Conversely, maybe the gate doesn't open up enough and you find yourself crouching a bit to get things inside the back. Whether you have issues reaching the gate when it is opened or are starting to get back pain from squeezing things underneath, we've got the fix for you.

Step 1 - Finding your height

With pleasantries out of the way, let's get started. Find the tailgate operating button under the rear section of the tailgate. While it is open, press the button and watch for the gate to start closing. Push it a second time now to stop the gate where it is best for you or the driver. If you are stature-impaired, get a step stool or ask someone on the taller side to reach the button for you.

Step 2 - Push and hold

After the button has been pushed a second time at the height you are satisfied with, push and hold the same button again for two seconds. You'll know that you've held the button for long enough when you hear a buzzing sound four times. Now push the button once more to close the tailgate.

Back to the way things were

If you wish to reset the height to the factory default height, then push and hold the button for 7 full seconds. If you've held the button for long enough, then you'll hear a buzzing sound four times followed by two additional buzzes.

There is another way

Okay, so there is another way to set the gate height from the infotainment system, but it takes a bit longer to do. This option is nice if you don't feel like getting out of the vehicle or you can't reach the rear hatch button and have no assistance. This info can be found in your NX or RX owner manuals for 2017 on pages 125 and 145 respectively or just check the glossary for (no giggling now) "Back Door System."
