The European market won't be getting the V8-powered IS 500, but one Spaniard has built his own V8-powered Lexus IS.

V8 IS

Lexus surprised everyone when they finally confirmed the return of a V8-powered IS. And it was a pleasant surprise, seeing as how the overwhelming notion in the automotive industry these days seems to be that the V8 is breathing its last breath. By putting the ultra-popular 5.0-liter V8 under the hood of the sedan, the manufacturer has made many of us very happy.

Europe's Solution

It's great news for those of us residing in North America. Sadly for enthusiasts in Europe, the IS 500 performance sedan will not be available to purchase. So our friends across the pond will have to make do with the IS F to scratch their V8 IS itch. Alternatively, you could go the route of Spanish native, Kevin, and swap a V8 into a first-gen Lexus IS.

3UZFE Swap

What he's done with his IS200 is amazing in more ways than one. Not only is his lightweight compact sedan now powered by a 3UZFE 4.3-liter V8 mill from a Lexus GS430, with the aluminum block motor, the car now weighs even less than it would with a straight 6. And the 3UZFE is no slouch, easily capable of around 300 horsepower.

Smooth Transition

And the swap is relatively painless, given the fact that the V8 is also a Toyota product. The engine mounts are OEM, and the transmission tunnel and the exhaust manifold have been slightly altered to accommodate the new plant. The power is sent back to the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic and limited-slip rear diff.

Aggressive Stance

The custom dual exhaust system complements the V8's sound. And it has an adjustable valve that can be closed for a quieter note. The built 2001 IS200 sits on deep-dish 18-inch wheels. The ride height has been lowered courtesy of a set of coilovers, And the aggressive stance is complemented by the beautifully integrated steel wide body kit.

Successful Build

The Lexus started life as a silver sedan. But through the process of the rebuild, it has been given a fresh coat of Atlantis Blue from BMW. The creativity in repurposing parts from several other vehicles is worthy of applause.
