LC500 and Supra Make For an Even Drag Race

The Lexus LC500 and Toyota Supra have little in common, but make for an intriguing drag race.

Different Birds

The Lexus LC500 and Toyota Supra, while both being sporty vehicles, are otherwise very different. That much is obvious. On one side, we have a luxurious grand touring machine, while on the other side we have a spry vehicle that prioritizes handling over supreme ride comfort. One is a flagship, while the other is more of an affordable sports car. So it makes no sense to, say, pit them against each other in a drag race, does it? Well, that's precisely what Throttle House has done in this video.

Power Delivery

Both of these cars take a very different approach in terms of how they make power. The LC500 utilizes a naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that produces 471 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, while the Supra employs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine making 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque.

Power to Weight

Despite its considerable power advantage, the LC500 also weighs a lot more - 4,280 pounds versus 3,400. That makes it slower on paper, too - 4.4 seconds to get from 0-60 mph versus the Supra's 3.9 seconds. However, the LC500 has a higher top speed  - 168 mph versus 155 mph. Thus, the only thing left to do here is line them up and see what happens.

Three Matchups

It's worth noting as well that the LC500 does not have launch control, but the Supra does. Thus, for the first race from a dig, Throttle House engages the launch control to see how things go. The second race will be without launch control from a dig, while the third race will be from a roll to see how these two cars truly match up.

Happy to Lose

As one might imagine by looking at the numbers beforehand, the Supra leaps out on the LC500 in the first race and never looks back. The Lexus driver does note that he's "not even mad" about losing, however, because the car is "so nice and so comfortable." Race number two goes pretty much the same way, though the Lexus does fare a little better off the line.

Getting Closer

Once again, the Lexus driver is too enthralled with the car to care much about losing, and is now enjoying the glorious sounds its V8 is belting out. Regardless, it's time to try a roll race, which should even things out a bit for the heavier, more powerful LC500. This time, the Lexus does get the jump, but eventually, the Supra reels him in and nabs a much closer victory.

Surprised?

Ultimately, the results of these drag races are not surprising at all, given how the cars match up on paper. But no one would have ever really expected the LC500 to beat the Supra, right? As Throttle House points out, the Lexus is a much nicer vehicle to be in, which makes silly things like drag races somewhat pointless in this case.
