Lego Supra GR Celebrates 35th Anniversary of the Model

As children, we've all built Lego cars and daydreamed about turning them into a real, drivable car. The folks at Toyota and Lego had the same idea. And they actually made it a reality!

Lego Supra

If you're familiar with building with Legos, you'll have a decent understanding of just how shockingly impressive a full-size model of a vehicle is. In the case of the MKV Supra, a car with no shortage of complex curvature in its design, it's downright awe-inspiring. The 477,303-piece model resembles a video game rendering of the Supra from back in the early 2000s.

35 Years

Created as a result of a partnership between Lego Japan, Legoland Japan, and Toyota Gazoo Racing, the life-size Toyota Supra Lego model serves to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the legendary Japanese sports car.

Accuracy on Display

The accuracy of the model is worthy of applause. The body of the toy Supra is built almost entirely out of Lego bricks. The exceptions are the driver's seat, gauge cluster, the steering wheel, the wheels, and the badges. Being made of Legos, it's also significantly heavier than the actual car.

It Drives, Too!

The model has working lights, as well. And that's because... You guessed it, it actually drives! Granted it's way slower than the real Supra, and most other cars, for that matter. But you can watch this full-scale Lego model of the Toyota GR Supra actually rolling around like a pixelated glitch in the matrix!

Electric Power

It's not equipped with the Supra's internal combustion motor, though. Instead, it's been given a small electric motor with a top speed of 17 mph. It's not like anyone would want to drive this carefully crafted Lego model any faster than that anyway!

Thousands of Hours

The joint project between Lego and Toyota had to be extremely well-thought-out. That's why the creators of the model spend 3,000 hours developing and engineering it, and then another 2,400 hours actually built it. The most difficult part of the exterior to build had to have been the curvature underneath the ducktail spoiler. And it looks like they got it spot on!

Touring Japan

The Supra Lego model will be on display at Legoland Japan until October 11th. After that, it will go on a tour across Japan, helping enthusiasts celebrate 35 years of Supra at different racing events.
