Daily Slideshow: Lexus Announces Plans to Sell Sport Yacht

Shigeki Tomoyama, executive vice president at Toyota, has announced the company will begin selling a bigger version of the 42-foot Lexus “Sport Yacht Concept” boat. This announcement signals a strong pivot for the company, which just one year ago referred to the concept as a “bespoke one-off project” that would not go on the market. What changed their minds?

Last year, Toyota dismissed the idea of getting into the boating market and referred to its luxury sports yacht concept as a one-off project. The company’s thinking changed when it won the Boat of the Year award at the Japan International Boat Show in Yokohama.

Tomoyama’s take

“Based on our amazing experiences in engineering, building, testing and showing the Lexus Sport Yacht concept last year, we’ve decided to take the next bold step of producing an all-new larger yacht that builds on the advanced nature of the concept while adding more comfort and living space,” Tomoyama said. “We plan to start sales in the U.S. in the latter half of 2019, with sales in Japan following in the spring of 2020.”

Fantastic attention to detail

The original boat was engineered by the Toyota Marine Division. A single running proof-of-concept was built in partnership with Marquis-Larson Boat Group of Pulaski, Wisc. It's hull, inner structure, and superstructure of the bespoke open sport cruiser was made of hand-laid carbon fiber fabric and vacuum-infused with two-part polyurethane resin.

The version that will hit the market will be 65 feet

It will carry up to eight guests on board and will feature a high-tech multimedia entertainment system. The boat will be able to reach a top speed of 49 mph. Specifications, pricing and other details of the yacht will be announced at a later date.
