Lexus BX Will Be a Tiny Little Luxury Crossover

Based on the Toyota Yaris Cross, the BX could be the new entry level Lexus.

Getting Smaller

Crossovers are all the rage these days, and Lexus makes plenty of good ones. But there's always room for more in the lineup, and now it looks like the luxury automaker might be planning on adding yet another one - this time, a tiny little utility that would slot below the UX. Called the BX, this pint-sized product would be based on the Toyota Yaris Cross (pictured), according to Chinese car site Autohome.

Get 'Em Young

The UX has a base price of just over $32k, which means the BX could wind up in the upper $20k range. That would fly in the face of previous comments made by the automaker that it would not sell a vehicle that costs less than $30k, but who knows? Perhaps they've come to the realization that there's just too much money to be made, and getting entry-level buyers to become brand loyalists is a great way to generate future income.

High-Riding Hatchback

The BX would also be a unique product, as no other luxury automaker currently sells something as small as the 2021 Toyota Yaris Cross. Which itself is basically just a high-riding hatchback, but that's the world we live in today. Autohome's report indicates that Lexus would make a few obvious changes to the vehicle to make it their own, of course.

Possible Changes

The BX would feature styling cues taken from the UX, with a lower ride height than the Yaris Cross for sportier handling characteristics. It would ride on Toyota's GA-B platform, which means it could also be powered by the Yaris Cross' hybrid drivetrain that consists of a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine coupled with an electric motor that produces a combined 116 horsepower.

Visual Differences

The Yaris Cross, of course, looks like an SUV thanks to its higher ride height and pronounced body moldings. The Lexus BX, on the other hand, would be more car-like and subtle in appearance. And of course, the interior would be much more artful, with your typical Lexus adornments that currently reside in every model, top to bottom.

Not Coming Here?

It's worth noting, however, that the BX probably wouldn't make it to the U.S. European and Asian customers tend to appreciate tiny vehicles like this more than Americans, which is why most every one of them is sold there. But it will be interesting to see what Lexus decides to do in that regard.

Potential Seller

If we do see the BX come to reality, Autohome guesses that it would bow as a 2023 model. We'll certainly be keeping a close eye on this potential vehicle's development because it could be a big-time seller for the luxury brand, even if it never sees U.S. soil.
