Future Revival?

The Lexus CT was discontinued in the U.S. following the 2017 model year, but the hybrid hatchback lived on in Japan until early this year, a move that came as crossovers continue to dominate the sales charts. Once a hot seller, Lexus moved just 4,690 units in 2017 in the U.S., a paltry total by any measure. However, we haven't forgotten about the CT, and neither has Lexus, apparently, as Best Car Web is reporting that a revival may be in the works.

Different Form

The report indicates that a second-generation CT is indeed in development, and it won't just consist of one model - rather, multiple variants are in the works, apparently. However, the CT itself will reportedly come back as a crossover and not a hatch, which should surprise quite literally no one.

Lineup Positioning

Information is otherwise scant, but the report does note that the CT would slot above the entry-level UX in Lexus' current lineup, though not by much - in fact, it would still be a value proposition just like its predecessor, so we imagine that it would fall on the smaller side of the equation as well.

Trio of Powertrains

Another unsurprising piece of information contained in this report is the fact that the new CT will reportedly offer an array of powertrains, including a traditional 2.5-liter gas powerplant, a 2.0-liter hybrid setup, and an EV, which makes sense given the current state of the market.

Luxurious Fuel Sipper

As most Lexus fans are aware, the last-gen CT was offered only as a hybrid with a 1.8-liter gas engine and electric motor that generated a combined 134 horsepower - a paltry sum, but the CT was always marketed more as a luxurious fuel sipper than a performance machine.

Sure Bet?

Truthfully, the only reason the CT fell out of favor in the U.S. is our love for crossovers and SUVs, as the reasonably-priced hatch offered a lot for its sub-$30k price tag. As such, we wouldn't be surprised to see it revived as Lexus continues to expand its utility lineup moving forward.
