Lexus Enjoys Massive Growth Across Globe Over Last Year

The culprit for sagging sales in the Staes is most likely an aging lineup but there are new vehicles on the horizon.

Bucking the Trend

To be rather blunt about it, 2019 wasn't a great year for much of the automotive industry. After many months of great sales, most automakers experienced a bit of an expected slump. That didn't include Lexus, however, as the brand enjoyed a rather large double-digit sales gain across the globe, a phenomenon explored in detail by Bloomberg.

Moving Overseas

On the heels of the brand's 30th anniversary, Lexus sales jumped 10% as the automaker moved 765,330 units in 2019. But the numbers were even more impressive in China, where Lexus sales grew 25% to 202,000 vehicles. As well as Europe, where gains totaled 14% and a total of 87,000 units moved.

Tale of Three Regions

Lexus' parent, Toyota, called North American sales "level" with last year, however, as the brand moved 325,000 units here in 2019. Bloomberg blames this on the lack of a larger SUV in Lexus' lineup, which makes sense given Americans' current preference for big 'utes. Meanwhile, their smaller and more fuel-efficient hybrid offerings are doing very well in China and Europe.

New Milestone

Lexus credits much of its success to strong sales of the UX and RX crossovers, which are doing well in all parts of the world. And that helped them reach an amazing sales total of 10 million vehicles worldwide since their inception in 1989. Meanwhile, Infiniti stands at just 2.6 million, and Acura at 5.4 million.

Refocused Strategy

After falling behind rivals years ago in places like China and Europe, it appears that Lexus' focus on those markets is paying off. But the brand insists that it hasn't forgotten about U.S. customers, citing several new products in the pipeline designed to appeal to those customers.

Luring Customers

All of this is obviously good news for the Lexus brand. And we imagine that a refresh of its current aging lineup won't hurt one bit. If the automaker can manage to lure more North American customers into dealerships this coming year, it could be another one for the record books.
