8 Years in a Row

According to an annual survey carried out by J.D. Power, Toyota's luxury car brand Lexus is the most dependable vehicle on the market today. Lexus has carried the title for 8 consecutive years. J.D. Power conducts the survey based on the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles produced in the last 3 years. For models produced since 2016, Lexus owners recorded the least number of issues when compared to other brands.

A Decent Score

Lexus ranked first with 106 problems experienced per 100 cars. Toyota and Porsche came in second, with each scoring 108. Chevrolet and Buick followed with scores of 115 and 119 respectively.

Stethoscope Treatment

Much of the brand's dependability lies in how its motors are built. Each engine is placed on an "assembly balancer" and closely scrutinized for flaws. Skilled engineers listen and touch each engine, making sure that it's running as it should. Sometimes, a stethoscope is used to ensure that it's also humming to the correct tune.

Not A Speck of Dust

The Lexus team tries as hard as possible to keep particulate matter away from the precision components. Before carrying out an assembly, engine parts are transferred to a lab-like room that's isolated from the entire facility. Here, technicians are given air showers before entry while parts are placed in dust-free containers and vacuumed to ensure that they are spic and span.

A Different Kind of Metal

Not all Aluminum is alike. As such, Lexus ensures that only the highest quality gets to its engines. Among the 10 "gurus" that oversee the production of a Lexus at different stages is a man assigned to check on the quality of Aluminium in its liquid state. The fewer the gases, the tougher the metal.

Military Precision

Workers carry out each installation process by the book. They are trained technicians who can tell the difference between the front and back of an engine component by simply touching it. Sometimes, the assembly process is carried out with the supervision of up to three superiors. With the help of digital measurements, effective craftsmanship ensures that the final product is as smooth as it should be, and those minute imperfections are captured in time.

Vigorous Testing

There's a lot within our surroundings that could interfere with a vehicle's electrical systems. Engineers at Lexus place their prototypes in a large chamber full of electromagnetic interference. Temperatures are also increased to make sure that your Lexus can survive and operate under the harshest of atmospheric conditions.

Best Year for Vehicle Dependability

J.D. Power discovered that there was a 4% improvement in vehicle dependability this year. This is the highest level of improvement ever recorded, making this the best year yet. German automotive brands also beat the overall average for the first time since the survey began 30 years ago.

Most Common Car Problems

According to the vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power, Dave Sargent, the problems that vehicle owners complain most about include unreliable transmissions, batteries, and uncooperative voice technology. As for batteries, the most affected lot are electric car owners. Traditional batteries are getting damaged at an alarming rate, even with the advancement in digital vehicle technology.

We Aren't There Yet

Vehicles are increasingly becoming dependable by the day. However, vehicle manufacturers still have a lot of problems to wrestle with. With more cases of failed batteries, awkward voice recognition, and unresponsive transmission shifts; automakers need to come up with solutions that will not only work, but also last. The new advanced driver assistance systems are also not likely to help with dependability scores.

Great Dependability and Beyond

Lexus has been recognized for its dependability for a good number of years. On top of this, it has been a leader in introducing some of the best vehicle technologies. With such credibility, it's unlikely that Lexus brand will leave first place anytime soon.
