Up to Speed

It's been roughly a year since Lexus unveiled its latest, updated GX 460 in North America. But those in Eastern Europe and Asia have been tooling around with the old one in the meantime, until now. Many don't even realize that the big off-road utility is even sold in Europe at all, but it is limited to just a handful of places - namely Russia, Ukraine, and the Caucasus region, and the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan.

Exterior Enhancements

The latest GX brings about a host of updates, starting with the exterior. There, you'll find a newly revised spindle grille design, LED headlights with three pods, a smaller Lexus emblem at the back, and new satin metal trim surrounding the license plate. The side moldings have also been removed for a cleaner look. In addition, a few new colors have been added to the palette: Sonic Titanium, White Pearl, Mercury Grey, Black, Starlight Black, Garnet Red, Fire Agate, and Deep Blue.

Interior Enhancements

The interior has received a few enhancements as well. They include a newly available Dark Rose finish, along with Grey Sapele wood trim, which is paired with aluminum. The steering wheel has been redesigned, and Lexus has added a 4.2-inch full-color TFT display, a pair of USB outlets for rear-seat passengers, and a new cabin air filter.

Tech Updates

Technology-wise, there are a few tweaks for the GX, including the addition of Lexus’ Multi-Terrain Monitor and Panoramic View Monitor, both of which provide a view of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings to the driver to make maneuvering the big SUV quite a bit easier.

Crawling Through

Lexus has also added Crawl Control to the GX's existing Multi-Terrain Select system, which adjusts the settings to account for various off-road conditions. Crawl Control is essentially what you think it would be - it controls the gas and brake pedal to maintain a slow speed over rough terrain so the driver can focus on steering.

Tried and True

The drivetrain in the latest GX 460 remains the same, tried and true 4.6-liter V8 that produces 296 PS (292 hp) and 438 Nm (323 lb-ft) of torque. It's mated to a six-speed ECT-i automatic transmission, which sends power back to a Torsen limited-slip center differential. And of course, the GX is still four-wheel-drive, and a capable one at that.

These are all relatively minor updates, of course, but certainly welcome ones. And they'll be good enough to keep the GX afloat until a completely new version comes along in the next couple of model years.
