The Lexus IS 500 bowed to much fanfare, mostly because it's almost exactly what fans have been clamoring for for years now - the return of V8 power to the compact luxury sedan. However, that still isn't quite enough for some folks, who want a bit more utility with their smoky burnouts. For them, these renderings from Sugar Design show off the ultimate V8-powered family hauler - a Lexus IS 500 Sportwagon.

Superior Option?

The IS has been offered in wagon form before, of course, and could even be had with a manual transmission. via the SportCross. These days, crossovers and SUVs have since taken over, but many would argue that a wagon is a superior option in virtually every way.

Wagon Renaissance

The wagon has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance in recent years thanks to new models like the Audi A6 Avant, which has proven to be a massive success. Thus, the time seems right for a high-performance wagon version of the IS, and this could be it.

Stylish Creation

Enter these renderings depicting what the artist calls the IS 500 Sportwagon, a shooting brake of sorts that has plenty of power and room for the entire, extended family. Based on the F Sport Performance version of that sedan, this stylish wagon certainly looks the part.

Perfect Pairing

The latest IS's sleek lines lend themselves quite well to wagon form, in our humble opinion, which isn't always the case in the world of automobiles. Covered in dark burgundy paint, it looks simply fantastic, and we imagine that no one would be ashamed to drive it, which was historically the case with some family wagons.

Soft Spot

In fact, we think that Lexus could build this IS 500 Sportwagon in limited quantities and sell every single one of them, and the car would become in instant classic among enthusiasts as well. After all, many of us have a soft spot for wagons, not to mention naturally-aspirated, V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive vehicles of all sorts.

Business Case

It's unlikely that Lexus would do such a thing, of course, though it did give us the V8-powered IS that we've been craving since the departure of the IS F - even if it isn't quite up to the F's level of hardcore performance. Regardless, the newer, cushier model would make the perfect base for a grand touring wagon like this.
