Old Dog, New Tricks

The 2019 Lexus GX 460 is starting to show its age. In a world where midsize SUV's are moving to unibody frames, the 10-year-old GX chassis continues on with body on frame and solid rear axle technology. It may be dated but it does allow the GX to be one of the more capable off-roaders still available in the segment. But just because the architecture is slightly dated, doesn't mean the technology on board is.

Alphabet Soup

Given that this is a Lexus and not some lowly 4Runner, the GX 460 already came packed with all sorts of acronyms for both on and off-road comfort. KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System), VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), and AVS (Adaptive Variable Suspension) help may sure all 4 wheels are always touching the ground and getting the best ride possible even on the highway. Then there is the DAC (Downhill Assist Control), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), A-TRAC (Active Traction Control), and Crawl Control for when the family camping trip hits an unexpectedly hard trail.

Interior Comforts

Of course, your occupants will have just as much tech available to them on the inside. Comfortable heated and cooled front leather seats and heated rear seats combined with 3 zone climate control assure every passenger is perfectly warm or cool. The optinal17 speaker Mark Levinson sound system will assure that they are entertained as well. To make sure everyone get where they are going safe the GX also comes with a pre-collision system that monitors the driver's attentiveness and lane departure warning systems. Lexus decided that wasn't enough though and added some features as standard for the 2019 model year.

Now Standard

Now included in the GX as standard or no charge dealer option are both Lexus Enform and a Blind Spot Monitor with a Rear Cross-Traffic Alert System. Lexus Enform is a 3 fold system that helps connect you and your car. Not only does it offer access to emergency services if the need should arise, but it also helps you keep up to date on all your mileage based service and connects you to a dealer of your choice. The coolest feature off Enform is the ability to connect your smartphone, smartwatch, or Alexa and allows you to lock and unlock doors, start the engine and climate controls, and check the fuel level.

The now standard Blind Spot Monitor now offers Rear Cross-Traffic Alert System that can inform the drive if a car is coming while backing out of a parking spot, something anyone who has ever driven in a crowded city will be very thankful for.

Not long for this world

The Lexus GX 460 takes everything people love about old school trucks like off-road capability and larger towing capacity and is now combining it will all the technology people expect and wish for in a brand new luxury SUV. It is uncertain how much longer the GX will stick around in its current form as regulations such manufacturers to unibody trucks, but even if this current model proves to be the last of the body on frame style GX's, at least it will go out with a bang.
