On Display

The Shanghai Auto Show, or Auto Shanghai 2021 as it's formally known, is in full effect with a number of new and interesting models on display in China now through April 28. One of them is the brand new Lexus LF-Z Electrified Concept, which was just revealed a few weeks ago. This model is far more than just a concept, however, and signals the beginning of Lexus' transition into the realm of all-electric vehicles.

Target Market

It makes a lot of sense for the LF-Z Electrified Concept to make its public debut in China, where EV adoption is much further along than most of the rest of the world. The country has invested over $60 billion in electrification and intends to transition to all-electric or hybrid vehicles only by 2035. Last year alone, Chinese consumers purchased one million more EVs than American consumers.

Making the Transition

Lexus has been at the forefront of hybrid technology since it launched the RX 400h in 2005 and has sold nearly two million hybrids since, so making EVs should be an easy transition. The key here is to retain the automaker's signature driving experience and reliability while making that transition, which is what the LF-Z aims to do.

Right Place, Right Time

The LF-Z is just the start of a big transition for the automaker. By 2025, Lexus plans to introduce 20 new or improved models, including more than 10 electrified models consisting of BEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles(PHEVs), and HEVs, in line with the needs of each country and region around the world and based on the concept of offering the right products in the right place at the right time.

Best of Both Worlds

That includes sedans and crossovers, of course, as well as sporty models to satisfy our inner enthusiast. Lexus understands that a lot of people like to actually drive cars, so even though it will dabble in autonomy, it will also build vehicles that are rewarding to drive.

Environmental Impact

Lexus aims to offer electric variants of all its models by 2025, with the sales ratio of electric vehicles exceeding that of gasoline-engine vehicles. By 2050, Lexus aims to achieve carbon neutrality throughout the lifecycle of its entire model lineup - from the manufacturing of materials, parts, and vehicles, to vehicle logistics, to the final disposal and recycling of older vehicles. In this perspective, and with a clear mission to achieve carbon neutrality, Lexus will reduce the environmental impact of materials’ manufacturing processes.

Future of Lexus

All of this starts with a single concept - the LF-Z Electrified. So if you're in or near Shanghai over the next week or so, we'd suggest dropping in and checking out the future of Lexus in person, while you can.
