Last of Its Kind?

For many years now, rumors surrounding a potential Lexus LFA successor have swirled, giving fans of the luxury brand hope that we'll see at least one more ICE-powered supercar before electric power takes over. For a while, such a machine was rumored to arrive in the form of the LC F, a high-performance, twin-turbo V8-powered version of the existing grand tourer. However, some new rumors have surfaced recently suggesting that we're in store for something arguably even more exciting.

Gas to EV

Following the debut of the Electrified Sport Concept - as seen here - most assumed that the LFA successor will be all-electric, which was somewhat disappointing in spite of this car's impressive estimated performance specs - including a 0-60 time of just 2.0 seconds. However, before that EV debuts, we may see a couple of gas variants first.

Turbo V8 Power

One of those proposed models will be a plug-in hybrid making a rumored 937 horsepower, as Club Lexus recently reported, as well as a regular, non-electrified version cranking out 710 horsepower. Both of those cars will run a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 as their base engine, a powerplant that has been in development for years now and was previously excepted to debut in the now-dead LC F.

Weight Savings

The LFA successor - rumored to be called the LFR, officially - is being developed for GT3 racing, though the road-going version will reportedly ride on Toyota's TNGA GA-L platform. Weight savings will be the name of the game here, with Lexus using lightweight materials like carbon fiber and aluminum throughout to enhance performance as much as possible.

Styling

As far as how it looks, LFR prototype sightings suggest that it won't deviate much from the Electrified Sport Concept, which is a good thing given how attractive that car is. Like a properly futuristic, modern version of the LFA, that concept has drawn nothing but praise for its handsome, sleek lines.

Supercar For Everyone

Coupled with what could be a dual-clutch gearbox, every version of the LFR promises to offer startling performance, giving fans of both ICE supercars and EVs the chance to buy something that suits their fancy. And even though the gas-only version will obviously be the slowest of the bunch, we imagine that many buyers would gladly trade sheer performance for its traditional approach.

Coming Soon?

As far as timing goes, the ICE LFR will reportedly launch in 2025, followed by the all-electric version in 2026. That seems pretty close, but then again, a prototype has already been spied testing, indicating that we aren't terribly far off from finally seeing a proper LFA successor in the flesh.
