Previewing the Future?

It's no secret that Toyota is working on a brand new Land Cruiser to replace the outgoing, aging model. And that likely means that we'll be seeing a revised Lexus LX too, as both vehicles ride on the same platform. The next-gen Land Cruiser has been spied on a number of occasions, but we have yet to see any spy shots of a new LX. Regardless, that didn't stop a page called Land Cruiser Updates from applying the spied Land Cruiser's design elements to the LX in this interesting rendering.

Inspired Design

Essentially, the rendering takes the body of the next-gen Land Cruiser and meshes it with the front end of a Lexus, giant spindle grille and all. That front end design borrows several styling cues from the LF-1 Limitless Concept, which figures to inspire Lexus design in the years to come. Overall, it's a pretty good attempt at guessing what the next-gen LX might look like.

Big Question

The big question, however, is will the LX continue to ride on the same platform as the Land Cruiser, or will Toyota give it its own underpinnings? It's hard to say at this point since the automaker seems to be working to make the Land Cruiser even more of an off-road-focused model than it always has been, while few modern-day LX owners venture off the pavement.

Getting Old

What we do know is that the current-gen LX is a bit long in the tooth and in need of some major updates. The third-generation model has been on sale since 2008, though it has undergone several facelifts and refreshes over the years. The most recent debuted back in 2015, consisting of nearly all-new bodywork and a revised interior.

Proper Replacement?

Another big question is whether or not Toyota will even sell the new Land Cruiser in the U.S. Currently, many believe that they won't and that the LX will simply take its place as the automaker's large, luxury SUV in North America. Considering the fact that U.S. Land Cruiser sales had dwindled down to nothing in recent years, this strategy would make a ton of sense.

Question Marks

As of right now, the future of the LX is a bit murky, though it seems likely to stick around, thanks to solid sales performance. However, what it will look like remains a mystery, as well as what will power it and whether or not it will retain its strong Land Cruiser ties. But we should learn more very soon if the presence of the new Land Cruiser is any indication.
