Dreaming a Dream

Lexus somewhat surprised the world last year when it unveiled the LM, a luxurious MPV based on the Toyota Alphard. The van has since gained quite a bit of popularity in Asia as a large and posh people hauler, partly due to its many interesting features. So that begs the question - what if Lexus designed and built a van for the once van-hungry U.S. market? If so, it might look a little like this redesigned 2021 Toyota from Sugar Design.

Perfect Fit

The end result of this little exercise is a handsome van that looks even better than the already attractive Sienna. It's almost like that familiar Lexus front end was made for this van, as it looks more natural in this space than the existing Toyota's, at least in our humble opinion.

Just Right

Rounding out the more luxurious look is a set of 20-inch wheels that lend this van a sporty look. And the whole thing just works. The LM's styling caused quite a few snickers from U.S.-based Lexus fans, as its looks are a bit too far out for them. But this iteration might be just right for stateside consumption.

History Repeating?

Of course, it's a pretty big stretch to say that the U.S. is ready for a minivan revival. There was a time, not too long ago, when Americans couldn't get enough vans. These days, SUVs and crossovers have taken over completely. But who knows? History does have a way of repeating itself.

Solid Base

As for the Sienna on which this rendering is based, there is quite a bit to like. Its sculpted body isn't typical of this segment, as it packs more SUV-like styling. But what doesn't these days? It's also available as a hybrid and with or without all-wheel-drive, the first of which provides best in class fuel economy.

Proper Competitor

An available XSE package delivers 20-inch wheels, more aggressive front, and rear bumpers, and "sport" seats up front. And the Sienna can tow up to 3,500 pounds while also returning a best EPA combined fuel economy rating of 33 miles per gallon. Throw in a stylish, configurable, and a rather large interior space, and you've got a van capable of competing with SUVs in virtually every way.

Modern Revival

It would certainly seem like vans are regaining popularity in certain parts of the world thanks to their sheer volume and people-hauling capabilities. Whether or not Lexus chooses to once again capitalize on this remains to be seen. And while the U.S. may not be ready for another van just yet, we wouldn't be surprised to see a revival someday soon.
