Something Else

The all-new Lexus LX was finally revealed just recently, ushering in a new era for the long-running full-size luxury SUV. That obviously got the bulk of attention, but in a video covering the LX's reveal, Lexus also briefly showed off something else that's undeniably cool - a UTV powered by hydrogen.

Running on Hydrogen

Toyota has long been exploring hydrogen as a viable fuel source for vehicles, so it makes sense that it might use the same sort of powertrain in a UTV. Officially dubbed the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle (ROV), Lexus didn't provide a ton of details outside of the fact that its internal-combustion engine burns hydrogen instead of gas, like traditional UTVs.

Very Lexus-Like

As least we can say that the UTV certainly looks like a Lexus, with its spindle grille and L-shaped headlamps and taillights. It also looks like a pretty luxurious off-roader in contrast to the typically rugged and simple UTVs that we're used to seeing, which fits the brand's mantra.

Lexus Off-Roader

The bronze color ride is certainly environmentally friendly as well, as hydrogen-burning engines emit only water - not any other sort of emissions that might harm the earth. In this video, we get to see its off-road capability as well as the UTV tackles all sorts of terrain, from muddy pools of water to deep embankments.

Alternative Fuel

In addition to the Mirai, Toyota also revealed a Corolla race car earlier this year with a hydrogen-powered 1.6-liter inline-three cylinder engine that was derived from the GR Yaris. Toyota changed out the engine's ignition and fuel delivery systems to make it work with the alternative fuel, but it otherwise operates just like the gas-powered version.

Who's Right?

It's highly doubtful that Lexus will actually produce and sell this cool UTV, but it's still a pretty nifty idea that added a little intrigue to the LX reveal. And while the rest of the automotive industry pushes towards electric power, Toyota remains convinced that hydrogen has a future, and we'll just have to wait and see who's right.
