Generous Coverage

The Lexus UX300e is an important vehicle for the automaker, mainly because it's their very first all-electric model ever. And while it may not look very different from the gas and hybrid-powered versions of the UX, it will be getting the most generous battery warranty coverage of any EV in Europe when it goes on sale there in early 2021.

Many Miles

Lexus recently announced that the UX300e will come with a 10-year, 1,000,000 kilometers (600,000 miles) battery warranty, which is simply amazing. The warranty will cover capacity degradation of the 54.3-kilowatt-hour battery pack below 70%, "provided that the owner respects the regular health checks foreseen in the maintenance program," according to the automaker.

Long Time

Most other EV builders give owners the same sort of battery degradation coverage, but none come close to this sort of time and mileage coverage. It's long enough, in fact, to cover at least the second and maybe third owner of the vehicle in some cases.

Technical Details

Lexus was also keen to share a lot of technical details related to its shiny new battery pack. Its capable of achieving 400 km of range in the NEDC cycle, corresponding to over 300 km target range in the WLTP cycle. Located under the cabin floor and rear seat to ensure a low center of gravity, the 288-cell lithium-ion battery pack doesn't take too much space away from passengers and cargo, either.

Extended Life

For increased control and battery life, sensors monitor the voltage of each battery cell and block, as well as the battery cell temperature. In tandem with the car’s advanced Battery Management System, this results in maximum usable battery cell capacity and an extended driving range. The battery's air-cooling system is both safer and lighter than water-cooled systems. With cooled air circulating inside the battery pack, stable battery output can be attained even at high speed and during repeated rapid charging.

Long Life

Reliability was also key in the development of the battery heating system. Heating elements under each battery module minimize the impact of cold weather on the driving range, ensuring full power is available from the start. Finally, for long, trouble-free service life, the battery pack is fitted with rubber seals to protect it from water and dust.

Backup Plan

And in case any of that fails, Lexus UX300e owners needn't worry, because they're backed up by the best warranty in the business. Plus, in addition to the battery extended care, owners also receive a 3-year vehicle warranty and 5-year coverage (or 100,000 km) for drivetrain defects. Given how rock solid Lexus vehicles are, to begin with, we doubt any of that will be needed very often, however.
