Full EV Concept

As with most other automotive manufacturers, Toyota and Lexus are experiencing a shift in their philosophy as the industry moves towards electrification. And with the reveal of the LF-Z concept car, Lexus is creating a visual reference point for their future EV models. It represents a new era for the company, who have yet to build an exclusively electric vehicle.

Expanding EV Lineup by 2025

The only full EV in the Lexus lineup currently is the UX300e, which shares its platform and body with the hybrid UX. The company has outlined the introduction of 10 new EV offerings by 2025. And the LF-Z concept will serve as the foundation upon which the new wave of Lexus products will be designed and engineered.

Visual Representation of the Future

Visually, the LF-Z concept feels like the natural progression of what the company has shown off in recent years. It has some similarities to current Lexus vehicles, while also drawing a bit of inspiration from design studies such as the LF-30. Significantly, while there is no physical grille or air intake system at the front, the spindle graphic has survived, albeit as a sculptural styling feature.

Airy Cabin

Perhaps the most interesting part of the concept, if it is indeed a look into the near future of Lexus, is the cabin design. Unlike what we've grown used to with many Lexus vehicles, the dashboard of the concept car shows off a minimalistic approach. All the information the driver needs is summarized on a few screens and there are very few, in any buttons at all.

Tazuna Driving Philosophy

And that is due to an initiative by Lexus to apply the 'Tazuna' philosophy of intuitive car control to the driving experience of its vehicles. Similar to the way a horseback rider and the horse are connected with a single rein, the Lexus philosophy aims to minimize driver input. It will use AI to learn the driver's preferences and apply them when needed.

Exciting Future

The concept car features a 90kWh Lithium-ion battery. The motors are built into the axles and use the Lexus Direct 4 system which controls the amount of power and braking applied to each wheel for higher efficiency and performance. The LF-Z is rated at 536hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a 370-mile range. This concept previews an exciting prospect for the company's electrified future.
