Looking Into the Future

Movie cars often leave an impression on us, and for good reason - that's what they're designed to do. That's especially true of the futuristic Lexus Off-System Sport Car  - better known as the Lexus 2054 - that starred in the 2002 movie Minority Report. The director of the film - Steven Spielberg - just so happens to own a Lexus, and wanted to show his audience what sports cars might look like 50 years in the future, which is what led to this interesting concept's creation.

Real-Life Features

Thus, Spielberg, Lexus, and Harald Belker - the man behind the Batmobile in Batman and Robin - teamed up to bring this idea to life and create a Lexus that the movie's main character, Tom Cruise, would use as a getaway vehicle. The result was the Lexus 2054, which had some features that were far-fetched, but others that have actually shown up on today's production vehicles.

Fantasy and Reality

Some of the car's features - like its self-cleaning and self-repairing memory metal and composite body that also changed colors based on the driver's mood - may never actually happen in real life. But others - including the 2054's hydrogen-powered fuel cell and solar panels - already have.

Previewing the Future

That also goes for the car's digital entertainment system, which features an "internet connection," along with automatic parking and a self-return feature, an infrared system capable of detecting obstacles and stopping if necessary, and laser-assisted driving.

Genius Creation

Back in 2002, all of these things certainly felt like the future, but today, many of them are already present on production vehicles. That's the genius behind the Lexus 2054 - it did actually predict the future fairly accurately, for the most part. In reality, however, the three movie cars were slapped together only for looks, as is the case with most that star on the big screen.

Enduring Legacy

The trio of Lexus 2054 movie cars were powered by GM V6 engines and were equipped with manual transmissions, with interiors that were all business and zero luxury. One - this time painted blue - also made an appearance in the 2005 Michael Bay movie The Island, and someone built a replica called the Vetter Custom Dimensia that was powered by a flat-six Porsche engine back in 2016.

Notable Sale

One of the three original Lexus 2054 movie cars also sold at a Bonham's auction back in 2011 for the princely sum of $101,790, but it's unclear what has become of the rest. Regardless, this cool concept is notable for not only its role in a popular movie but also for accurately predicting the future in terms of automobiles - so far
