Long Awaited Debut

It seems like we've been waiting forever to see the Toyota Supra GR GT4 racer make its official debut, and that's mostly because it has. But now, finally, we've gotten a bit of good news. It seems that Toyota will finally be rolling its Supra racer out for its global debut at this weekend’s four-hour Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie season-opener.

Single Team

It was last July when Toyota first pulled the covers off the GR GT4, which seems like forever ago. But this weekend will end that long void when we get to see German team Ring Racing take one out. They will field a single Supra in the SP10 category for Michael Tischner and Nürburgring Driving Academy chief instructor Andreas Gülden.

Gradual Flow

A gradual customer rollout of GR GT4 models began last October in Europe, but the coronavirus pandemic held things up a bit over the last several months. Now, easing restrictions have restarted the flow of vehicles from the manufacturer’s TGR-Europe facility in Cologne.

Additional Teams

Both UK-based Speedworks Motorsport and French team CMR have since received their cars, both of which are destined for an FFSA GT campaign after they finish testing.

Past Experience

Ring Racing was previously able to spend some time with a GR Supra GT4 during an NLS pre-season test back in March. In the past, they've fielded both a Lexus RC F and a Toyota GT86 in the Nürburgring 24.

Initial Test

"We are very pleased that the season can finally start under the specified conditions," said team boss Uwe Kleen. "A big thank you to the VLN, who set everything in motion so that racing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife is possible again."

"Racing in the first race for a new car is always a big challenge. But we are well-positioned, and already gained valuable experience during the first test in March, and we have two experienced pilots alternate with Michael Tischner and Andreas Gülden. The main goal will be to get through without problems and learn more about the car."

Worth the Wait

We're thrilled to see the GR GT4 out on the track this weekend, and we imagine that we aren't the only ones. And even though current German regulations prohibit any fans from attending the race, we'll be happy to settle for just watching it on TV.
