Mystery of the Giant White Tent

If you've taken a drive down I-75 near Midtown Detroit recently, you've undoubtedly noticed this massive structure that looks like some kind of giant white tent. Especially since it sports a huge Lexus logo. But what lies inside the Lexus Velodrome isn't some kind of impromptu showroom or dealership. Rather, it's a 64,000 square foot, $4 million dollar indoor cycling arena that might be the best thing to happen to the local competition cycling community ever.

Finding the Perfect Location

The Velodrome was designed by Detroit Fitness Foundation executive director Dale Hughes, who has built over 20 similar structures around the world. The Lexus Velodrome is only the fourth such structure in the United States. The Velodrome was built on Tolan Playfield, a site designated as such in 1968 to honor two-time Olympic gold medalist Thomas Edward Tolan. It's a fitting site for such a structure, considering Tolan's reputation as the "World's Fastest Human."

Intelligent Design

The Lexus Velodrome consists of a banked cycling track, an infield for spectators (and concessions, of course), and a jogging/walking/skating track closer to the infield. There's even a designated area where fitness classes can take place, as well as space for a weight room. But the coolest thing about the Lexus Velodrome is that it isn't just for professional cyclists.

Novices Welcome

A variety of classes are offered at the Velodrome, including those for novice cyclists who simply want to try out a real race track. Of course, you can't just take your beach cruiser out there, but specially prepared bikes are available for rent. Various levels of classes are available so no matter what your skill level might be, you can work your way up, all the way to competitive racing.

Creating Future Olympians

For those more interested in spectating than participating, races take place every weekend. Once a month, a race will be broadcast on Detroit's local PBS station. Admission on race day will run you $10, though you can bring up to ten of your friends and rent a suite for $150. Spectators are also able to watch the action from the upper rim of the track for a unique perspective. The goal of the Velodrome, according to Hughes, is to create future Olympians. And this looks like the perfect venue to do just that! For more information on the Velodrome in Detroit, just click here
