Spawning a Contest

A few months ago, Lexus unveiled a UX with a rather unique design. Created by tattoo artist Claudia De Sabe, the crossover was the first of its kind in the world, a celebration of not only traditional Japanese artistry and craftsmanship but also brave design. The tattooed UX was such a big hit that the automaker thought it would be fun to host a contest that let everyone else try their hand at designing a tattooed version of the UX, and they recently announced the winner.

Winner Winner

The winner of the Design your own Tattooed Car competition is Kyra Cleeton, who created this UX featuring Native American tribal symbols. "The dream catcher is a talisman that is believed to protect people from bad dreams, while the specific direction of arrows can be used to symbolize messages: left to ward off evil, right to signify protection, and downwards to mean peace. The headdress often symbolizes bravery and strength," Cleeton explained.

Dragon Power

We imagine that voters had a tough time picking a winner in this contest because there were a host of cool choices. That includes Alison Ellis' design, which features a dragon that wraps around the entire vehicle. "I thought a dragon would look great on a Japanese car, showing strength and power," Ellis explained.

Good Fortune

The contest was limited to people who lived in the U.K., but Lexus still had to give props to this UX design, which came from a Japanese artist named Yutaka. Yutaka’s retro livery was inspired by old Japanese advertisements and matchboxes. The script on the roof and rear of the UX translates to good luck, happiness, and good fortune.

Actual Tattoo Inspired

Iona Doran got the idea of using jellyfish from a tattoo that she designed for herself. "I included lots of color to make the design noticeable," she said. "Jellyfish move through the water with such grace but some are also the most powerful and deadly creatures on earth."

In Bloom

Trinity Gritter's idea highlights the value of plants and nature in everyday life. It's based around the lilies in her mother’s garden, which in May bloom in a variety of colors including orange, pink and white. "I believe this year plants and flowers have helped people's well being more than ever," she said. "This piece shows my appreciation for them."

Adding Flow

Our last contender comes to us from Helen Hamer, who has dreams of becoming a tattoo artist one day and only started using digital art this year. Her design features red roses, which are commonplace in tattooing, as well as butterflies and pearls. "I added the pearls to add some flow to the car’s body and give it a feeling of motion," she said.
